Sun is also a star book review |Summary

"Sun is also a star" is one book I was craving to end my reading slump. After a long time, pure fiction satisfied my soul and this time the genre of the book was "Love Story".

The protagonist of the book:
  • Natasha is a science student who likes to see things coming and likes to plan. She is an immigrant from America about to be deported back to Jamaica in a day.
  • Daniel, a wanna-be poet who starts crying seeing other cries. He is a Korean American who is getting admission to Yale as a medical student only to make his parents happy but deep down he is not sure if he wants to do this. This is an important day for him, he has to decide his faith.

This story is about one day and what a difference one day can make in life

The story is more than a love story as the supporting characters in this story play an even role or even bigger than the main protagonist. No character is perfect in this story each with a big flaw, whether that be Natasha father who blames his family for his failures and burdens them with his expectations, or the attorney who is an angel to immigrants and a helpless guy seeking advice on whether to let go of family or love from 17year old Korean boy whom he has to interview for yale.

The story is more than a love story as it discusses about God, Eyes, the Multiverse, Sun, Dark matter (which fills 27% of the universe), love, Data science. All these topics are discussed and debated in this book from Science/Natasha and literature/Daniel perspective though in the end historical law of the Universe wins.

The book also touches upon a few definitions of life elements that touched my soul especially when Daniel defines God:

"I think all the good parts of us are connected on some level. The part that shares the last chocolate chip cookies or donates to charity or gives a dollar to a street musician or becomes a candy striper or cries at Apple commercials or say I love you or I forgive you. I think that's God. It is the connection of the very best part of us and that connection has consciousness and we call it god."  ~

and when the attorney defines adulthood:

"Meeting your obligations is the definition of adulthood, kid. If you're going to make mistakes and break promises, now is the time. Get your screwing up done now When the Consequences aren't so bad. Trust me. It gets harder to do it later."

Few special moments in the book when I smiled:

  • When Natasha explains the "Dark matter" of the universe to Daniel and how it is because of it the whole universe is holding up but science is not sure what it is and Daniel defines that dark matter as love and for the first time Natasha is ready to compromise with science and agrees to him.
  • When Natasha tells Daniel that "She is not his family" and he replies she is, in another multiverse, and for the first time Daniel is ready to compromises with his literature and agrees to science.

I badly wanted this to end on a good note, I was scared with just 5-10 pages left and I don't want to end this book with a feeling of sadness, I so wanted a climax like a Bollywood movie where something happens at the airport and they are together but it doesn't. With time they move on leaving a beautiful impact on each other, making them do better as individual's only to find out multiverse is a reality all because of one alternate history.

This is a must read and I highly recommend. 🙂
